Alternate Title: Guess What I Did All Weekend?
Here are three more DVDs to add to your rental list (please bear in mind that in general, I tend to disagree with movie critics, but I am judging films solely on their entertainment value).
The Stepfather (Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward): This one was better than I anticipated. I was annoyed when the trailers made it obvious that Walsh is a bad guy, but the movie makes that clear from the get-go. The suspense comes from waiting for his stepfamily to figure it out. Some sketchy plot details (I would have liked to see more about what made Walsh’s character such a freak) and a few too many ‘girlfriend-in-bikini-by-the-pool’ shots for my liking, but otherwise a good watch. This is a remake of the 1987 original, and according to reviews, pales in comparison.
Law Abiding Citizen (Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx): We actually saw this one in the theatre, but rented it because we enjoyed it that much. If you’re not in to blood, you might have to turn away a couple of times (okay, far more than a couple of times – the violence gets top billing here) but the rest is very psychological, and extremely entertaining. (No ‘Foxx-and-Butler-in-swimsuits’ shots in this one. Though there is one Butler’s butt scene.)
Couples Retreat: You need to have the right frame of mind for this movie. Though it explores relationships, it is not a deep, thoughtful cinematic piece of work. It’s light, somewhat funny in a typical Vaughn/Favreau way, and perfect for one of those nights when you just want to be entertained, and don’t want to think too much. I could easily mark tests or write posts while watching this one. In fact, I think I did.
If you have any differing perspectives on these films, or have other new rentals to recommend, please feel free to add a comment!
And p.s., no, I did not watch all three of these movies this weekend! Only two of them. I do have a life!
I agree about Law Abiding Citizen. It is very violent but it really keeps you interested.
