I am so thrilled to announce that Reading Assessment Done Right: Tools and Techniques for Data-Driven Instruction, which I wrote with Dr. Stephanie Stollar for the Scholastic Science of Reading in Practice series, is now available for pre-order (shipping the first week of January)!
The target audience is K-6 educators (though I’ve used the content in PreK and 7/8).
Unlock the full reading potential of every student with Reading Assessment Done Right. Authored by the dynamic duo of Stephanie Stollar and Kate Winn, this book informs and empowers frontline teachers to use effective, evidence-based assessments to screen, diagnose, and monitor their students. It demystifies assessment to help teachers improve reading outcomes for all students. When assessment is done right, teachers see the power of it because they can pinpoint student needs, target instruction, and track progress. The companion website includes download-ready scheduling and planning tools, as well as video clips featuring the authors discussing various types of assessments and their purposes.
The amazing Dr. Pam Kastner generously wrote the foreword to the book, and as the release gets closer, we’ll be sharing endorsements from other well-respected readers as well.
Why pre-order a book now that doesn’t come out until January? Well, you can cross it off your to-do list, for one thing! (That’s always a key reason for me lol.) But really, it’s extremely valuable for us as authors, because pre-order numbers give the publisher an idea of how much interest is in the book…which so far is incredible! And typically you aren’t charged until the book ships – so it’s just a promise to buy; the financial investment comes later.
We’ve already heard from teachers and administrators at both school and district levels who plan to use the book for book studies (I can’t wait to pop in and say hello), as well as higher education instructors who will be using it in courses.
If you don’t work in K-6 education, we would love if you could pass this along to someone you know who does (everyone knows a teacher!) – as there is no other book like this on the market for them, and it’s so important. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions!
(Insider note: if you order directly from Scholastic, you’re more likely to get the book sooner)

In case you missed it, here is a video of the two of us announcing the book at the IDA Ontario LitLearn conference in April!
