We just got back from a fantastic family trip to Montreal and I can’t wait to share all the details with you. I’ve been to the city at least a dozen times before (I am the daughter of a hard-core Canadiens fan) but always in the winter, when I race from hotel to arena and back as quickly as possible in the frigid air. I wanted to plan a trip with my husband, girls and parents where we could enjoy Montreal in the summertime!
Here are our reasons to choose the 4-star Residence Inn Montreal Downtown:
The location
The Residence Inn Montreal Downtown is super close to restaurants (we had dinners directly across the street and two doors down from us, plus ordered pizza from right next door), fantastic shopping (more on that later), and it’s a half hour walk to Mount Royal or Old Montreal. Plus the subway stop is less than a block away!
The rooms
Complete with fully-supplied kitchenettes, these clean and modern rooms are so convenient for families. We had adjoining rooms with my parents which was great for visiting (the kitchen peninsula was perfect for grandparents/grandchildren games of Trouble and Crazy 8s) while still giving everyone their space, and our room had two double beds as well as a pull-out chair so the girls even got their own beds, which doesn’t usually happen when we travel! Speaking of the beds, they were extremely comfortable – no tossing and turning and wishing for my own!
The perks
You can log in to your Netflix account on the TV (the girls were pumped about that), there’s free Wi-Fi and there were warm cookies and a huge jug of fruit-infused water in the lobby. Nice.
Plus, we got a 30% discount for our La Ronde tickets by purchasing them through the hotel, which was a significant savings.
The breakfast buffet
It’s included, and it’s great. My husband is always skeptical about “free breakfast” because for him, a muffin and some berries do not a breakfast make. This one has scrambled eggs and egg whites, either sausage or bacon, plus a huge variety of extras: fruit, yogurt, cereal (cold and hot), toast/bagels/English muffins, pastries, a waffle maker, plus juices and hot drinks.
The people
From the front desk to the breakfast room, all of the employees were friendly and helpful. I give particular credit to the gentleman who very patiently explained to me how to get from the hotel to La Ronde using the Metro. (I used the subway in London for four days, which is the extent of my underground travel experience, so I had a lot of questions which he answered well. It’s a pretty slick way to travel.)
We were all really pleased with the quality of the hotel, and I would highly recommend it!
Now that I’ve said all that, I do want to let you know two things, the first one being that this hotel does not have a pool (though there is a 24/7 fitness centre). I see it as the kind of place you choose when you’re going to be entertained by the city surrounding you. Also, while there is parking close by (with in/out privileges for $25 per night) if you are not a light traveller it seemed tricky to get one of the 15 minute loading spots right in front of the hotel during peak check-in/check-out times. Just something to be aware of!
