As the summer wedding invites start to rush in from your oh-so-in-love friends, siblings, cousins and coworkers, the first thing that typically comes to mind is “What am I going to wear?” But there’s more to being a wedding guest than choosing the right look. Don’t rely on the happy couple to supply everything you need to enjoy the day – come prepared!

There are a few mishaps you can count on when it comes to summertime nuptials. I’ve rounded up a list of everything you’ll need to stay comfortable and carefree from “I do” to the sparkler exit.

Deodorant. All that dancing can work up a sweat. Don’t get caught unprepared! Deodorant wipes are a convenient and portable option that fit in any clutch, purse or pocket.

Makeup touchup kit. If you took the time to apply makeup for the wedding, you’ll want it to last throughout the entire event. At the very least, you’ll need a lip product to reapply after dinner and blotting tissues to cut down on shine. If you have the space, throw in eye makeup too in case of any unexpected tears (you will wear waterproof mascara, of course!)

Breath mints. You never know if onions and garlic will be on the menu! Stay fresh with a small tin of strong mints, or some gum to prepare you for all that loud-music close-talking.

Bug repellant. Bugs are notorious summer wedding crashers. For serious protection from uninvited guests of the insect variety at an outdoor wedding, choose a bug repellant with DEET like Muskol. Muskol will last you up to eight hours, so you’re covered even if the festivities go into overtime.

Mini first-aid kit. Weddings can be long affairs and a sudden headache or an annoying cough can ruin your day. I recommend bringing along a few bandages, cough lozenges, an antacid for stomach discomfort and your go-to headache and pain medication. I like Aspirin Extra Strength because it works fast!

Tissues. This one is a no-brainer. Sniffling and sneezing on your plus one is a major wedding faux-pas. Also, if you know you’re a crier (guilty!), these are a must.

Insoles. Some brides these days will put out dancing flats for guests when their toes get tired, but don’t rely on it! I know wearing “sensible shoes” isn’t always an option, so pick-up an insole that can cushion the strain of standing and dancing without tripping up your style. Dr. Scholl’s has brand new ultrasoft leather insoles that add comfort when walking and dancing in heels. As a bonus, they also help to keep feet fresh and dry!

Of course you’ll want to play it safe and bring your own emergency items as a guest, but if you’re getting married yourself or helping to plan a wedding, it’s always nice to provide a basket of these sorts of things that attendees can access in the washrooms.

You could also include toothpicks, hand sanitizer, a lint roller, bobby pins, stain remover pen, Coppertone sunscreen, wet wipes, baby powder…anything a guest might appreciate having access to.

My mom was even ahead of Pinterest and put together great baskets for the guests at our 2001 wedding – of course now, there are tons of ideas online including cute signs to go with the items, like this one from Etsy:

One last wedding-emergency tip: plan ahead to ensure that your underwear stays under. At a friend’s wedding years ago my husband and I were on the dance floor when I realized my strapless bra was making its way down my body. As it sat around my waist, I instructed my husband to hold on very tight and steer me towards the washroom so I could handle the wardrobe malfunction before it hit the floor! Don’t let this happen to you, ladies. Roadtest all pieces of your outfit in advance. You’re welcome.
