I’ve written before about the importance of taking a sick day when you need one (I just did it last week, to tell you the truth; nobody wanted those germs), and despite being high-profile, many stars don’t hesitate to take care of themselves when necessary too.

As much as we try to prevent common illnesses by sleeping, eating right, drinking lots of good fluids, avoiding germs, and getting our seasonal flu shots, we still may find ourselves suffering from one type of bug or another…celebrities included.

At some point you’ve probably seen your favourite star on social media sharing symptoms or a diagnosis, or perhaps just giving you a sneak peek at how they’re spending a sick day. When you’re committed to live performances, recovering can be especially tricky, however, and sometimes you just need to back out of your commitments and take care of yourself.

Some examples:

Mariah Carey recently cancelled several Christmas performances due to a respiratory infection.

Adele has cancelled shows citing laryngitis and a chest infection. (I chose this photo because we saw her at this Vancouver performance!)

Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Green Day, Willie Nelson, Meghan Traynor, Paul McCartney, Elton John…the list goes on and on. It seems like it doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, young or old, solo or group or what genre of music you excel in; no one is 100% invincible when it comes to bacteria and viruses.

What’s more, experts warn the number of flu cases is continuing to rise across Canada, suggesting the peak of infections could come within a few weeks. Thankfully, it’s not too late to visit Shoppers Drug Mart to cover yourself for the rest of the season!

Keep the odds in your favour and take whatever steps you can to stay healthy this season, and remember…if a star can cancel a show affecting tens of thousands of paying fans, your workplace can probably make it through a day without you when you need to get better!
