Summer is on the way (or so I’ve been told) and it’s time to start thinking about some summertime style and beauty tips!

  • Get your feet ready. While I love the latest messages about bikini bodies (if you have a bikini on your body you have a bikini body) I’m not sure the same theory applies for summer feet. I know I feel more confident with a fresh coat of polish, and an exfoliating pedicure doesn’t hurt (there are tons of at-home ideas out there if a professional appointment isn’t in the budget).
  • Remember foot care isn’t just about looks: It’s important to keep your feet healthy and pain-free. I actually went for an awesome Medi-Pedi recently at a foot care clinic which was almost completely covered by my extended health benefits. If you have a plan, you might want to see if you’re covered! If you’re going to be doing a lot of walking (as I will be in London…I’ve mentioned my travel plans, right?) or spending time in some stylish-but-not-so-ergonomic footwear, you’ll want to be careful of blisters. Dr. Scholl’s® Blister Cushions with Duragel™ Technology are thin, flexible and nearly invisible, and they conform to your foot to prevent and protect blisters. You can also try adding an insole to your heels to stay comfortable on your feet longer. For strappy summer sandals, try Dr. Scholl’s® For Her™ High Heel Insoles. The unique gel is practically invisible and the slim-fitting design won’t make your shoes feel too tight or crowd toes. (I have two weddings to attend this summer, and both receptions are taking place in barns…so I’m not sure whether heels will be a good idea or not!)

  • Lighten up on moisturizer (especially if you have oily skin) and makeup for a fresher summer look.
  • Drink up! (I mean water, don’t get too excited!) While I’m not sure how solid the science is about how what we ingest affects our skin, we do know that our bodies benefit from hydration, and as the temperature heats up we need more fluids to do the job.
  • Protect your skin: I won’t be the first or last blogger to urge you to wear sunscreen. A great option is Coppertone’s new ClearlySheer Lotion with SPF 50, available for both face and body. This beach-level broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with SPF 50 won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. Coppertone® Sunscreen Lotion ClearlySheer® Face SPF 50 works great under makeup so you can wear it anywhere from the office to the beach. I wear sunscreen year-round, though I realized partway through last summer that I don’t apply it close enough to the edges of my face…I had not-so-lovely dark patches right near my ears! My pasty Irish skin and I are coming to terms with the pale-is-beautiful movement, but if you must go darker, make sure it’s a faux-glow!

  • Protect your eyes: I’m a huge fan of sunglasses (of course now that I own the same Ray-Bans as the Duchess of Cambridge I’m wearing them all the time) and aside from being stylish, they’re so important for protecting your eyes outside. If vanity is the only way to appeal to you, remember that having a nice large frame also protects the skin around your eyes from squinting and sun damage, holding those crows’ feet and sunspots at bay!

  • Sleep. Have you noticed I work this advice into every possible post? I am a firm believer in the many benefits of a good night’s sleep, and not only will you look more refreshed, but you’ll have lots of energy and stay healthy to enjoy all of your summer plans. What could be more important than that?
